January: Grounding

Grounding:

realigning with the world around us

We are navigating circumstances of incredible upheaval all the time as we move through this new normal of pandemic-life, the horrors of the climate crisis pressing upon us all while the divides between us grow larger. Grounding is the method by which we find stability in the storm.

And yet, grounding is a bit of a buzzword these days. What does it actually mean? And why should we seek to be more grounded?

The term’s literal meaning is to align electrical currents to allow energy to flow through a body (think of a grounded outlet). Humans are conductors like anything else. The theory is that our energies can become out of whack, sending us into states of fatigue, anxiety and physical and emotional pain.

This month we explore the nature of grounding, how to notice when we are out-of-whack (a truly technical term), how to realign and how all of the above help us to reconnect with our innate creativity.

Our Open Studio session on January 18 at 7PM CST will give us a chance to share our own experiences and try new techniques that will enhance our creative flow.

Until then, many blessings.

How Surely Gravity's Law

Rainer Maria Rilke

How surely gravity’s law,

strong as an ocean current,

takes hold of the smallest thing

and pulls it toward the heart of the world.

Each thing—

each stone, blossom, child —

is held in place.

Only we, in our arrogance,

push out beyond what we each belong to

for some empty freedom.

If we surrendered

to earth’s intelligence

we could rise up rooted, like trees.

Instead we entangle ourselves

in knots of our own making

and struggle, lonely and confused.

So like children, we begin again

to learn from the things,

because they are in God’s heart;

they have never left him.

This is what the things can teach us:

to fall,

patiently to trust our heaviness.

Even a bird has to do that

before he can fly.
